What a frameless shower door is
A frameless shower door uses thick tempered glass, commonly 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch, with no metal frame around the panels. The glass is held in place by hinges, clips or brackets, so there is very little metal to see or to clean.
Because the glass carries the weight, the hardware is heavier than on other door types and the installation has to be accurate. Walls and floors are rarely perfectly square, so each door is normally made to the measurements of the opening.
Why homeowners choose them
Frameless glass makes a bathroom feel larger and lets the tile show. With no frame track, there are fewer places for soap scum and mildew to collect, which makes cleaning simpler.
Hardware comes in several finishes, such as chrome, brushed nickel, matte black and brass tones, so it can match faucets and fixtures.
Things to think about
Frameless doors cost more than framed styles because of the thicker glass and the hardware. Doors are usually hinged and swing out, so check that there is room in the bathroom for the door to open.
Water can escape more easily at the edges than with a framed door, so the layout of the shower and the seals matter. Ask about seals and sweeps when you request a quote.
